Poultry Farming

Broilers and layers both sell well, but imported chicken sets the price ceiling and feed cost sets the floor.

01

Business structure

A deep-litter or battery-cage farm raising broilers for meat or layers for table eggs, sold to cold stores and households.

Licensing & permits

The compliance path in Ghana, from registration through to sector regulators.

  1. 1Reserve the name and register the business at the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC)
  2. 2Get a TIN linked to your Ghana Card and register for tax at the nearest GRA office
  3. 3Apply for a Business Operating Permit from your Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly
  4. 4Get input and produce clearances from MoFA / Plant Protection and Regulatory Services
  5. 5Obtain an EPA permit where the operation involves waste, chemicals or land clearing
  6. 6Register with COCOBOD or the relevant commodity board if you deal in a controlled crop
04

Target market

  • Cold stores and chop bars
  • Egg wholesalers and provision shops
  • Christmas and Easter bulk buyers
05

Risk assessment

01

Newcastle disease or coccidiosis outbreaks can clear a whole flock in days

02

Erratic rainfall and a shifting planting season

03

Pests and disease wiping out a season with no insurance

04

Post-harvest losses from poor storage and transport

05

Farmgate prices set by aggregators, not by you

06

Marketing strategies

  1. 1Contract with aggregators and processors before planting, not after harvest
  2. 2Sell into Esoko / AgroCenta style market platforms for better price discovery
  3. 3Supply hotels, restaurants and supermarkets directly to skip middlemen
  4. 4Join a farmer-based organisation for bulk input pricing and buyer leads

Fees, levies and permit requirements change. Confirm the current position with the Office of the Registrar of Companies, the Ghana Revenue Authority and your Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly before you spend.
